As heatwaves rage through the west of the USA, San Francisco plans to use its famously colder weather to entice visitors to the city.
San Francisco’s summers are infamously chilly compared to the rest of the West Coast. Now, the city’s tourism boards want to turn San Francisco’s mild reputation into an advantage.
In an interview with The Guardian, Joe D’Alessandro, the chief executive of the San Francisco Travel Association said: “San Francisco has always been a cool break in the summertime, and as the rest of the world starts to deal with the effects of climate change, I think it becomes even more compelling. Just like in the wintertime people in colder climates go to desert resorts to warm up, [in the summer] they can come to a place with natural air conditioning like San Francisco.”
The tourism board plans to use that idea in its marketing in areas that face extreme heat, inviting residents of those cities to come to cool down in San Francisco. “Frankly, there aren’t that many cities like this where you must put a jacket on in August.”
The article points out that while San Francisco isn’t immune to the effects of climate change, it may be less affected by them than elsewhere.
