Turkish Airlines is set to be renamed and rebranded as Turkiye Hava Yollari, as part of the country’s overall drive to be known internationally as Turkiye.
The Turkish government has already applied to the United Nations to be recognised as Turkiye, which is the Turkish pronunciation of Turkey.
The traditional Turkish spelling was originally used when the country became independent in 1923 and the current government claim the domestic spelling better represents the country’s culture.
Some foreign heads of state have already used Turkiye when referring to the country and both the UN and Nato have, reportedly, formally begun using the more traditional spelling and pronounciation.
In terms of the airline, Hava Yollari is the Turkish for ‘airlines’.
With routes to nearly 130 countries, Turkish Airlines is one of the largest carriers in the world, flying to more countries than any other airline.
