Travel Insurer Multitrip.com Urges Irish Holidaymakers to Have Cover in Place Before Travelling Abroad this Summer

Travel insurer Multitrip.com has urged Irish holidaymakers to ensure they have adequate travel insurance cover in place ahead of summer travel disruption.

With Irish holidaymakers’ travel plans this summer already impacted by European strike action, holidaymakers are being urged to make sure that they have adequate insurance cover in place prior to travel.

A 24-hour strike action by Italian ground-handling staff took place on June 4, and a French air traffic control strike over the May Bank Holiday weekend which saw 40,000 Ryanair passengers affected by 220 flight cancellations.

Dubbed the ‘Summer of Chaos’, thousands of passengers missed flights last summer due to significant queues at Dublin Airport caused by security and check-in staff shortages. Aer Lingus cancelled several flights in late-June owing to “system pressures”; and in September, the airline cancelled 51 flights leaving thousands of passengers stranded because of a “major break in connectivity.”

Multitrip.com’s Jason Whelan said: “We have seen an increase in sales of Multitrip.com travel insurance policies in combination with our travel disruption cover, which is an add-on to our standard policy, which suggests that holidaymakers are more aware than ever of the risks posed by events like airline strikes and are taking precautions to protect their pre-paid costs or potential expenses.”

“European airlines are obliged to refund or rearrange flights but this does not extend to cover customers for lost accommodation costs. Multitrip.com Travel Disruption add-on cover gives additional coverage up to €1,000 for accommodation and travel expenses (including switching airlines) that you might incur or lose out on due to this delay. While the current strike action would only be covered if ‘Travel Disruption cover’ was booked in advance of the announcement, holidaymakers, have the opportunity to cover themselves for future unannounced strikes or disruptions,” he added

Annual Multitrip policies start from €19.95**. Travel Disruption Cover starts from €36.96**** per person.
