Lufthansa Cancels 1,300 Flights as Airport Strikes Begin

The Verdi Union organised strikes predicted for today are underway at seven German airports, including Frankfurt and Munich, Bremen and Hamburg.

Flag carrier, Lufthansa has expressed regret at having to cancel more than 1,300 flights.

“We regret the enormous impact of this strike, which is being carried out at the expense of our passengers,” Lufthansa said in a statement.

“We are not party to the collective bargaining and have no influence on it.”

There are at least another 1,000 flights cancelled which are operated by other airlines due to the airport strikes.

The chaos is expected to impact about 300,000 passengers. Lufthansa has offered rebooking and options on rail services ‘where possible.’

The union is seeking a 10% pay increase.

It comes just two days after a major flight disruption caused by an IT outage.
