Following the recent eruption from a nearby volcano, Iceland’s Blue Lagoon has temporarily closed, with plans to reopen on Tuesday. The eruption on Sunday led to the flow of lava into the town of Grindavik, causing damage to several buildings.
Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdottir has described the situation as “very serious.” While Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport remains operational, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is advising travellers to stay informed about the latest developments.
In an update, the FCDO stated, “A volcanic eruption began on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland on January 14, north of the town of Grindavík. All roads to Grindavík are closed, and individuals are advised to avoid the area.”
“Keflavik International Airport is currently operating normally, but travelers should stay updated with the latest information. Reykjavik and the rest of Iceland have not been affected. It is recommended to monitor local media for updates and adhere to authorities’ guidance.”
The Blue Lagoon, which had recently reopened on Friday after a volcanic eruption in December, announced on Sunday that it would remain closed until Tuesday, January 16. The decision was made as a precautionary measure following seismic activity detected in the area, despite the current eruption site being at a safe distance from the Blue Lagoon. Further updates and information will be provided as they become available.
