The Spanish city of Valencia officially begins its year as European Green Capital 2024. The programme of events and projects that will be launched during the year was unveiled during a ceremony at the Palau de la Música.
Valencia is Green Through Four Routes
The city is geolocated in a privileged enclave, facing the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by orchards and stabilised by the atmosphere created by natural and protected areas such as the Albufera and the Turia Gardens. All of these are key points for this year’s capital, which will be joined by other projects that are currently being developed, such as the forthcoming new Central Park, which will add 230,000 m² of green spaces to the city centre.
During the presentation of the capital, a guide called ‘Green Routes of Valencia’ was unveiled. This manual includes the aims of this year’s European Green Capital, as well as a set of routes to facilitate visitors’ enjoyment while showcasing the city’s sustainability achievements. These routes focus on three key areas: Nature, Valencia has a rich biodiversity, which is reflected in its natural spaces, such as the Albufera Natural Park, the Valencian orchard or the Turia Gardens.
Sustainable Mobility
The city is committed to sustainable mobility, promoting the use of public transport, cycling and walking. And the recovery of public space: Valencia has recovered public spaces for the enjoyment of citizens, such as the Turia Gardens or the Marina de València. The European Green Capital of Valencia routes are a unique opportunity to get to know the city and its achievements in terms of sustainability.
Valencia, Green Capital of the Mediterranean
2024 will be a year in which major international events will be held, as well as more local ones. And both citizens and visitors will be involved. A programme has been designed for this year that includes meetings such as the major conference on “Mission cities” and an important conference on wetlands, in which the Albufera Natural Park will be highlighted as an important asset.
In addition, there will be different celebrations arising from public-private collaboration, which will complete the programme to ensure the involvement of the whole city.
