Celebrating Colombia’s National Day

Colombia’s National Day, also known as Independence Day or “Día de la Independencia,” is a momentous occasion that commemorates the country’s liberation from Spanish colonial rule.

The Colombian Embassy hosted a celebration event in Dublin’s City Hall on Thursday 13th July 2023.

Celebrated annually on July 20th, this significant day is marked by joyous festivities, patriotic displays, and a deep sense of national pride. It highlights Colombia’s rich cultural heritage, diverse traditions, and remarkable history.

The event hosted by Andrés Encheverri, Deputy Chief of Mission and Consul was attended by political leaders, Country Ambassadors and Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithí de Róiste. Andrés Encheverri spoke about the strong working relationship between Ireland and Colombia. He is finishing up his post here and mentioned that he has really enjoyed his time in Ireland, he even spoke a ‘cúpla focal’.

Lord Mayor to Dublin Daithí de Róiste reciprocated with a few Spanish words and spoke about the similarities between Ireland and Colombia, that we both have shared battles for self-determination. He mentioned that Daniel Florence O’Leary, an Irishman, was involved in the fight for independence in Colombia. There have also been over 20 cultural events in Ireland to celebrate Colombia in the last five years.

Colombia’s journey to independence was not without its challenges, but on July 20, 1810, a fervour for freedom ignited in the hearts of the Colombian people. It was on this day that a group of influential figures, known as the Criollos, took the bold step of declaring independence from Spanish rule.

Colombia’s National Day is a time when cities and towns across the country come alive with exuberant celebrations. Vibrant parades fill the streets, showcasing traditional dances, music, and dazzling costumes that reflect Colombia’s diverse cultural mosaic. In keeping with this tradition there were two Colombian dancers at the event who performed a traditional dance.

Colombia’s National Day is a celebration that captures the essence of the country’s vibrant culture, historical significance, and unwavering national pride. It is a day for Colombians to come together to honour their past, celebrate their present, and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
