Air France – KLM introduces levy for flights using sustainable fuel

Air France KLM has introduced a levy on flights using sustainable fuel.

This charge will apply on all flights from France and Netherlands that use sustainable fuel on their trip.

Travellers in economy class will pay between one and four euro while those in business class will pay between 2 euro and 12 euros.

The levy is being introduced to offset the cost of using sustainable fuels.

Sustainable aviation fuel

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) allows airlines to reduce carbon emissions by 75%. It is made from used cooking oil or from forestry or agricultural waste so costs more money to produce.

Standard jet fuel currently accounts for between 20 and 30% of airlines’ costs, while SAF can cost anywhere from four to eight times that figure.

Air France’s Dutch partner KLM and low-cost subsidiary Transavia will also implement the surcharge on flights departing from France and the Netherlands
