A number of transatlantic flights have been cancelled today, Monday 29th October, and tomorrow, Tuesday 30th October, as a result of Hurricane Sandy affecting the East Coast of the USA.
Passengers are advised to contact their airline or airline’s website before travelling to Dublin, Shannon or Belfast International Airports.
The public transportation systems in New York City and in Washington DC have been closed until further notice and 375,000 people in low-lying areas around New York City have been ordered to evacuate. The Statue of Liberty, which re-opened on Sunday after a year of renovation, has been closed again until at least Wednesday and the New York Stock Exchange, which initially said it would remain open, has now decided to close today and possibly tomorrow.
Forecasters have warned that the impact could reach as far as 520 miles from the eye of the storm, with tropical storm force winds up to 73 mph.
