The UK’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate – which seeks to ensure that at least 2% of airline fuel used on flights flying out of the country be SAF – has officially come into being, with the British Government stating its confidence the ambitious target can be met.
Mike Kane, the UK’s aviation minister said he is “reasonably confident” the target will be met; saying he is hopeful more production is underway by the time airlines reach the end of their current fuel hedging period.
The concern is centered around the fact that there is currently only one SAF production plant in the UK.
Aviation industry body, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently said it was disappointed over the slow growth of SAF production and said current production levels would only meet 0.7% of aviation fuel needs this year.
