Wizz Air has signed up to be a member of the Alliance for Zero-Emission Aviation (AZEA) – the European Commission’s voluntary organisation to promote next-generation sustainable aircraft and aviation.
The Hungarian low fares airline – which is one of the fastest growing across Europe – last week became the latest European airline to sign a deal for the long-term supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
An increasing number of airlines have signed big SAF supply deals in recent months – including Aer Lingus and Ryanair.
Wizz joins EasyJet on AZEA’s membership roster, along with Airbus and Irish aircraft leasing firm AerCap Holdings.
As a whole, AZEA aims to come up with a blueprint and roadmap to achieve net-zero across the aviation sector. Airline members, such as Wizz and EasyJet, will educate non-airline members as to the challenges that must be overcome to achieve this.
With lower fuel consumption and lower carbon footprints and larger passenger load factors, low-cost short haul carriers are viewed as being the potential leaders in aviation climate action.
