Benjamin Lipnick from The Whitney Museum of American Art chats to ITTN’s Shane Cullen for the latest in the New York City Tourism + Conventions series filmed by ITTN.
Works by Living Artists
Benjamin explained this is the world’s leading museum of 20th-century and contemporary art in the US. The Whitney Museum focuses particularly on works by living artists. The collection comprises more than 21,000 works by over 3,000 artists.
Meatpacking District
The Whitney Museum’s new, larger building is located in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, a 20-square-block neighbourhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. This is also next to the Hudson River Greenway. This new location houses the most extensive collection of modern and contemporary American art yet. This includes iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O’Keeffe plus sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museum’s outdoor observation decks.
Admission & Hours
Tickets cost $25 (adult) with under 18s free. The museum opens from 10.30 till 6 pm every day with the exception of Tuesday (closed) and has a late opening on Friday till 10 pm. Museum admission is Pay What You Wish on Fridays, 7–10 pm. Advance Tickets for these hours are required. Pre-booking is advised.
