Venice to Double Day-Trip Visitor Entry Tax to €10 in April

The popular Italian city of Venice is set to not only continue its tourist tax for daytrip visitors this year, but actually double it.

The move – which will come into being on April 18 – will mean people visiting the city for a day trip will now have to pay a €10 entry fee, up from €5 last year.

Venice is one of the foremost exponents of visitor taxes, due to its ongoing problem with overtourism.

The daytripper tax is mainly aimed at cruise ship visitors getting off to walk around the ancient city centre before sailing off again.

Last year’s €5 daytripper tax netted the city €2.4m in revenue, with about 1,000 people paying over each of the project’s test days. People found not to be paying at any of the city’s paystations will face fines of anything between €50 and €300.
