The Irish Seniors Amateurs Close Championship sponsored by Tourism Malaysia took place in Portumna Golf Club from 3rd to 5th July. A new addition to the Seniors circuit, the Irish Seniors Close was played for the first time in 2009 when it was won by Maurice Kelly (Killeen). The 5th Irish Seniors Amateur Close Championship gathered distinguished golfers Garth McGimpsey (Bangor), Adrian Morrow (Portmarnock) and Arthur Pierse (Tipperary) among others, together with some familiar locals who competed for the title. Garth McGimpsey of Bangor GC is the 2013 winner.
In addition, Portumna GC was getting ready to start its Centre Open Week and waiting for news of its Lady President, Suzanne Corcoran, who was playing in the Irish Seniors Women’s Close championship. Guess what? Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) defeated Carol Wickham (Laytown & Bettystown) to win her first Irish Senior Women’s Close Championship at sublime Woodenbridge Golf Club in the Vale of Avoca on Friday 5th July.
The 19th hole must have been very busy in Portumna on Friday night!
