Almost three quarters of Irish holidaymakers who have the ability to work remotely – meaning they can perform their job from anywhere with internet access – admit to working while on holiday, according to a new survey by specialist travel insurance provider Multitrip.com.
The survey of 1,000 Irish holidaymakers reveals a significant overlap between work and leisure time.
The survey highlights that almost one in five (17%) feel pressured to continue working while on holiday, and just over one in eight (16%) spend an hour a day on work tasks.
Furthermore, 20% always take their work laptop or phone with them, staying accessible to colleagues and clients throughout their holiday, and over a fifth (23%) never fully disconnect from work.
Interestingly, over one in ten (13%) have worked from a holiday destination without informing their workplace, and 18% try to cut costs by combining a holiday with a work trip. Despite this, only 16% check whether their travel insurance covers work-related equipment like laptops and phones.
The survey found that 31% of holidaymakers are unable to work remotely, but of the remaining 69%, 74% have worked or not been able to switch off when on holiday and 26% could work but choose not to.
Jason Whelan of Multitrip.com commented: “With remote working becoming more popular and people choosing to combine holidays and working, it’s important to have the right cover in place. Multitrip.com’s travel insurance not only covers business trips as standard, but also provides the option to extend cancellation coverage and protect business equipment with the optional Business cover add-on, which can be added to a Premier or Premier Plus policy.”
One of Multitrip.com’s main messages is: if you are travelling with a work laptop, consider adding Business Cover to your standard insurance policy.
