Think Turkey – Think Amazing History!

“As one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Temple of Artemis is a truly wonderful historic site to visit on a trip to Kusadasi,”writes Joan Scanlon, Head of Sales & Operations, Wings Abroad Holidays.“The temple is located in the ancient city of Ephesus and, although only the ruins of the temple can be seen today, these ruins still offer visitors fascinating insight into the Hellenistic Age. THINK TURKEY-amazing history

“The original temple was built around 650 BC in honour of the goddess Artemis. To gain good favour with the goddess, merchants and kings would visit this temple and bring treasure and jewellery as offerings.

“Sadly, the temple was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the ages and the last destruction is thought to have been carried out by the Goths in 268 AD. Following this, the stones of the temple were used to construct other buildings – for example, the columns of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul are believed to have come from the temple.

“Many of the fragments of the temple are housed in the British Museum. However, still visible today in Ephesus is a massive 13-foot column that illustrates just how impressive the temple once was.

“As the temple is built on marshy lands, the best time to visit is during the summer when the waters are at their lowest. Also, during the summer, the foundations of older structures can be seen.

“There are a number of excursions available that will allow your clients to visit the Temple of Artemis, so make sure to book one of these through their hotel so that they don’t miss out on seeing this fantastic site for themselves.”
