TAP Air Portugal is set to introduce a passenger surcharge to offset additional costs associated with its transition to greener Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The extra charge is expected to come into force this year and will cover TAP flights departing European airports. However, it will exclude domestic flights between destinations within Portugal.

The charge will range from €2 for passengers in economy class in Europe to €24 for passengers in business class on intercontinental flights.

TAP said it will move to using SAF to cover 2% of its fuel – in line with new EU regulations – this year and that while the move is more expensive, it represents “an important step towards aviation with a lower environmental impact”.
