Seville is the latest city to consider incorporating a travel tax, or levy, for inbound visitors.
The southern Spanish city is, according to the Reuters news agency, planning to charge a fee to holidaymakers wanting to visit the city’s landmark square, the Plaza de Espana.
“We are planning to close the Plaza de Espana and charge tourists to finance its conservation and ensure its safety,” Mayor Jose Luis Sanz wrote in a post on social media platform X, accompanied with a video showing missing tiles, damaged facades and street vendors occupying alcoves and stairs Reuters reported.
The fee is, reportedly, only targeted at tourist visitors and not local residents.
