Passengers disrupted when Qantas grounded its fleet on 29th-30th October are now entitled to a free return economy flight within Australia or to New Zealand over a two-year period from 14th December.
“Throughout the long period of industrial activity we have been acutely aware of the impact on our customers,” said Chief Executive Alan Joyce. “This ticket offer is one of a range of initiatives we will be launching as a way of saying sorry.”
Further announcements will be made in relation to overseas-based customers and frequent fliers.
About 80,000 passengers were stranded when Qantas grounded 108 aircraft worldwide in an attempt to end strikes by three labour unions. Australia’s industrial relations regulator, Fair Work Australia, ordered an end to the stoppages and flights resumed on 31st October.
The disruption cost Qantas €51 million. The offer of free flights may cost the airline as much as €15 million.
