Qantas Drops Gender-Based Uniform Rules

Qantas is to end its policy of gender-based uniform rules, permitting female cabin crew not to wear high heels if they don’t want to and allowing males to wear make-up.

The Australian airline – which is following on similar moves, to ditch previously traditional male and female uniform categories, made by Virgin Atlantic last year – said the move would make uniforms more comfortable for staff from “diverse cultural backgrounds”.

“Fashions change and so have our style guidelines over the years. Our uniform standards have always been reflective of the times,” Qantas said.

However, it has been reported that Qantas’ move has been made on the back of pressure from trade unions representing its staff.
