Well known to the Irish travel trade, Rannveig Snooradóttir, Managing Director of OBEO Travel and Icelandic native shares an update with the trade on the explosive events occurring across the land of fire and Ice.
Earthquakes & Eruptions
Over the last weeks, Iceland has experienced thousands of earthquakes, sparking the potential for a volcano eruption. The earthquakes began beneath Mount Fagradalsfjall, which rests on top of a volcanic system and it is where two eruptions took place in the last two years on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
When lava spewed out near Mount Fagradalsfjall, 40 kilometres from the capital Reykjavik, in 2021 and 2022, it drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to catch a rare glimpse of an active volcano.
Birth of a New Volcano
“And today, the magma has resurfaced and we have a new volcano !!” explains Rannveig.
Obeo Travel has been monitoring the potential for this to happen for weeks. For travellers seeking to witness volcanic wonders up close and personal, Obeo Travel is the Icelandic expert. They customise exceptional itineraries for clients to truly experience the land of fire and ice.
Their “ONCE IN A LIFETIME VOLCANO ADVENTURE PACKAGE” includes private transfers, helicopter excursions above the lava field, a snowmobile safari on the glacier as well as a visit to the Blue Lagoon. Other optional excursions such as whale watching in the midnight sun.
