The Government has issued no change to its existing advice to Irish holidaymakers currently in Mexico, following violent outbreaks earlier this week in the wake of the killing of the country’s most wanted drug baron.
The violence has largely focused on the Jalisco region on the Pacific west coast of Mexico. The majority of Irish holidaymakers travelling to Mexico visit Cancún on the east coast of the country, more than 2,000km away.
While there have been reports of violence spreading to other regions of the country, Cancún, Mexico City and other areas seem to be remaining safe; and – indeed – certain airlines which had suspended flights to the country have now resumed routes. Notably, these include Air Canada, which has resumed flights to Puerto Vallarta in the Jalisco region.

On Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs advised Irish citizens to be alert, to stay away from the affected areas and to follow the instructions from the emergency services and local authorities. Anyone in need of consular assistance can call the Embassy of Ireland in Mexico on +52 55 5520 5803. If in Ireland, the Department of Foreign Affairs HQ can be contacted on 01 4082527.
The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) urged holidaymakers to follow that advice and to keep in contact with their travel agents.
Today, a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said: “The Department is monitoring the situation in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where ongoing security operations and incidents of violence have resulted in road and airport closures. The Department advises against all travel to Jalisco at this time, including to major urban areas such as Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. There have also been reports of security operations and related road blockages in other states, particularly those bordering Jalisco. Irish citizens already in Jalisco or in any other affected area are advised to shelter in place, avoid unnecessary movement, and follow the direction of the local authorities.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including its officials in Mexico, stands ready to provide all necessary and appropriate consular assistance to Irish citizens that need it. Irish citizens in need of consular assistance in Mexico should contact the Irish Embassy in Mexico City.”
