New Free-call Number for Samaritans

A new partnership to deliver a free-call number for those seeking emotional support involves Ireland’s six leading telecommunications providers and the Samaritans.

The telecoms involved in the partnership comprise BT Ireland, Eircom / Meteor, O2, Three, UPC and Vodafone.

Samaritans currently operates a lo-call 24-hour helpline for anyone struggling to cope and who may be experiencing feelings that could lead to suicide. The new partnership will result in a new, easy to recall number that will be free to callers.  The new number will comply with the European Commission’s minimum standards for harmonised emotional support services.

Suzanne Costello, Director of Samaritans said: “The announcement of this important partnership, which will result in a free phone number, comes just ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a hugely welcome and timely initiative, and we are grateful to the main telecommunications providers for their commitment to suicide prevention by entering into partnership with us.”
