The Polish city of Lublin has been named European Capital of Culture for 2029.
After fighting off stiff competition from Bielsko-Biała, Katowice, and Kołobrzeg – the three other cities that made the shortlist, Lublin will enjoy a year-long celebration of art and culture in 2029.
Lublin becomes the third Polish city to hold the title of European Capital of Culture. In 2000, it was awarded to Krakow, followed by Wrocław in 2016.
Being named European Capital of Culture means that a wide programme of events will take place in the city, which is sure to see a rapid increase in domestic visitors as well as overseas tourists.
Dorota Wojciechowska Director, Polish National Tourist Office, London, commented:
“Lublin might not be as well-known to some visitors as its famous counterparts such as Warsaw or Krakow, but this vibrant city is gradually making its way into the spotlight. In 2023, Lublin was the first Polish city to be granted status as the European Youth Capital. In the annual competition organised by the European Youth Forum, Lublin was recognized for its energy and inspirational investments in young people.”
She added: “For Lublin to be recognised as a European Capital of Culture is testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the process and we are all looking forward to 2029 when Lublin can really take its place centre stage”
