ITTN’s Shane Cullen was invited to the Icon of the Seas naming ceremony, which was held in the AquaDome. Football icon Lionel Messi had the honour of naming the newest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet.
Nick Wier (SVP, Entertainment, RCI) highlighted this was the biggest naming ceremony in the history of the cruise company. For those of you who remember Mario from Saved by the Bell, Mario Lopez was MC for the event – live and in person. He introduced senior members of the management team onto the stage along with footballing legend, Lionel Messi. As Royal Caribbean explains:
“It takes game, to change the game… it takes skills to bring thrills… And it takes icons to make an icon.” – Lionel Messi, an icon of football, officially named Icon of the Seas in a suitably glitzy affair.
The event showcased the people who make Icon of the Seas and the experiences onboard possible, highlighting crew members from around the world who form the Royal Caribbean team.
Audience members got a preview of the fantastic aqua show with aerial acrobatics, synchronised swimming, dancing and diving to a remix of the soundtracks of the Batman movies which was epic.
Entertainment included a very impressive medley by the Red Hot Chilli Pipers (pipe band) and were treated to a spectacle of fireworks to end an eventful day.
