Let the Kids Decide: More than a Quarter of Irish Parents Let their Children Choose Holiday Destination, Report Shows

Family holidays with Irish Ferries

More than one in four (27%) parents in Ireland let their kids decide where they should go on holiday, according to a major new survey looking at how people in Ireland make the choice each year.

Overall, the research – carried out by Opinium on behalf of Multitrip.com – shows:

  • 52% of holidaymakers say they’ve let their partner decide on a destination
  • Men were more likely to let their partner decide at 60%, while
  • 48% of women say they have let their partner decide where to go

Researchers also examined the role of technology in influencing our holiday planning:

  • 55% of people have used social media for holiday destination ideas, with the figure rising to 61% in Ulster
  • 57% have used social media for inspiration on what to do while they are on holidays – with Connacht leading the way on this one, at 64%
  • 43% say they have used TV or movies for holiday destination ideas – this was most popular among Gen X respondents (44 – 59 year olds) at 48%
  • Just over half (52%) say they will never use AI for destination ideas
  • 32% say they haven’t yet used AI to help choose their holiday location, but they plan to going forward

MD of Multitrip.com Jason Whelan says it’s not surprising that social media plays a prominent role in planning: “I’m not surprised that social media is the first source of inspiration, thanks to our devices we now have unlimited access to virtual tours of the most incredible destinations.

Whether it’s your partner, social media, your kids or your favourite tv travel show that sparks inspiration for your holiday, it’s important to remember the practicalities that apply for any holiday and travel insurance is a major factor to help ensure peace of mind.

Holidaymakers should be sure to book their travel insurance as soon as they book their holiday to help protect their investment. Travelling without insurance could leave you paying a hefty bill if something were to go wrong. With medical costs rising globally, travel insurance is that added layer of peace of mind that all travellers need.”
