Travel insurance specialist Multitrip.com is urging people to have sufficient cover in place before travelling abroad this summer, warning that Irish holidaymakers run the risk of losing thousands of euro if they don’t have the right policy in place.
The first major strike of the year – last month – saw the walk-out of more than 600 Border Force officers at London’s Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe, sending travel plans for thousands of travellers into disarray.
“European airlines are obliged to refund or rearrange cancelled flights, but this does not extend to cover customers for lost accommodation or other irrecoverable travel expenses, such as event tickets or car hire costs,” said Jason Whelan of Multitrip.com.
“We continue to see an increase in cancelled flights and holidays due to strikes and adverse weather conditions, and we understand the potential impact events like these can have on travel plans. With our Travel Disruption add-on, you’ll get extra coverage of up to €1,000 for additional or irrecoverable accommodation and travel expenses if your flight is cancelled. This will ensure customers are provided with an extra level of protection in the event their flight is cancelled.”
