Irish Holidaymakers Reminded of Importance of Travel & Healthcare Insurance When Planning USA Trips This Year

People in Ireland planning trips to the US this year are being reminded of the importance of travel insurance, particularly when it comes to healthcare.

Ireland has the highest rate of travel to the US per person compared to other European countries.

Data released by Insurance provider Multitrip.com shows the average travel insurance claim for medical treatment made by visitors to the USA in 2024 was more than €2,300. This figure is more than double the European average of just under €860.

Jason Whelan from Multitrip.com says that given the stark differences in healthcare costs, visitors need to know that being prepared before they travel can be of great benefit.

“Irish holidaymakers heading to the U.S. simply cannot afford to be without adequate travel insurance. The expense of healthcare in the US and complexity of the medical insurance industry over there mean a minor unexpected event could end up costing thousands of Euro.  A minor trip to the hospital in the states can cost up to €10K a day with more serious injuries or illnesses costing hundreds of thousands. Irish consumers need to be aware of this before they travel.”

“Ireland is the only country in Europe and the U.K. with pre-clearance capabilities operated by the Department of Homeland Security. As an ESTA-eligible country with pre-clearance, and more airline routes opening all the time, it’s easier than ever for Irish travelers to explore new destinations across the United States.

Mr Whelan said if people are thinking of making the trip, a small investment in insurance can save in a big way:

“Having travel insurance is essential. A one-year Multitrip.com policy including the United States and Canada starts at €43.14. Travellers should keep insurance in mind when heading Stateside,”
