According to the online survey of more than 2,500 customers carried out by Multitrip.com, the top five months for people to take a holiday in 2026 are:

  1. September – 33%
  2. May – 27%
  3. June – 26%
  4. March – 23.4%
  5. October – 23.1%

The travel insurance provider released the figures in light of previous research** carried out on its behalf by Opinium, which showed more than seven in ten (72%) people in Ireland would choose to travel off-peak to make their holidays more affordable. That study also showed:

  • One in five (20%) make lunch from the breakfast buffet to save on eating out
  • Half (50%) of people book their getaway 3 months in advance to try and get a good price
  • A quarter (26%) of people use loyalty points or programmes to bring down the price
  • Almost four in ten (38%) will keep an eye out for flight sales to try and bag a bargain

The latest study also shows holidays are still a real priority for people, even as the cost of living continues to rise. When people were asked to compare their total number of holidays taken in 2025 with their 2026 plans, the statistics revealed:

  • 26% took three holidays in 2025, and 28% say they’ll take three in 2026
  • 28% of respondents took two holidays in 2025, and 31% are planning to get away twice this year
  • 60% said they plan to spend more or the same amount on holidays in 2026 as they did in 2025.

Jason Whelan, MD of Multitrip.com said: “Holidays will always remain a top priority for people and when budgets are tight there are some options – like off-peak travel – that can help to cut the cost. However, travel insurance is not one of them. We urge all holiday makers to research their options to find the right product for them, and to make that policy purchase as soon as they book their trip, to maximise the level of protection they can get for their investment.”
