Irish Ferries has announced an agreement with P&O Ferries to make freight and passenger space available to one another on their Dover-Calais route, in order to enhance their service by shortening customer waiting times and improving the flow of traffic on this vital trade and connection route to the EU.
Irish Ferries said in a statement: “We expect the agreement to come into effect for our freight customers in the summer who will benefit from the advantages of a turn up and go service. This will, then, be followed on a phased basis for our passenger business.
“The agreement will increase both our efficiency on the route and will result in great flexibility and more choice for all our customers. Whilst the agreement means that capacity is shared, all commercial activities remain entirely under the control of each operator.
“This agreement is designed to ensure the resilience of the route, improve connectivity, and reduce potential port congestion.”
