Ireland Ranked 12th Most Expensive European Country for Ferry Holiday Bookings

Ireland ranks as the 12th most expensive country in Europe from which to travel on holiday by ferry, according to a survey.

However, the study ranks Ireland in the middle of the European league table for ferry prices, and far from being Europe’s most expensive ferry point.

The survey was conducted by Vivanoda – a web platform which makes it easy to find ferry, train, bus and plane tickets for travel within Europe – and it analysed tens of thousands of ferry fares on hundreds of routes in Europe.

Overall, the survey found that ferry crossings to Turkey, the UK and Morocco have the highest price indexes; while, proportionally, connections between Greece and Turkey and those between Morocco and Spain are the most expensive in Europe.

The shorter the crossing, the more expensive it is. Across Europe, prices are higher, on average, from July to September. They are also higher at weekends. Ferry crossings to Tunisia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Sweden have the lowest price index.

Regarding Ireland, the survey found that it is cheaper to travel by ferry on a weekday than at the weekend. Ferry fares, from here, are slightly higher in July and August than during other months of the year.

It also found that crossings from Ireland to Spain – particularly the Rosslare-Bilbao route – have the lowest price index; while crossings from Ireland to the UK are, by far, the most expensive.
