In this interview conducted by Travel Counsellors, Ian Walsh discusses his experience as a TC, so far.
Tell us a bit about your experience and background.
I started out in travel 23 years ago and worked for a few different agencies early on, gaining a lot of experience in short-haul, long-haul, and luxury travel planning. Those years gave me a strong foundation in the industry, but I always knew I wanted something more flexible and rewarding.
How long have you been a Travel Counsellor?
This April, I’ll be celebrating 16 years as a Travel Counsellor! I can’t believe it’s been that long, and I’ve loved every year of it. Being self-employed has given me the freedom and work-life balance that I could never have had working for a traditional travel agency.
Even though I work full time, I’m free to set my own hours, and I can travel whenever I choose, so taking advantage of last-minute deals is a great perk! At the same time, if I need to, I have the flexibility to take my laptop with me and work remotely.
And on a personal level, the support from both the TC community and our Head Office teams in the Cork and the UK means I never feel like I’m working alone. I have fantastic colleagues who are always there to share advice, offer help, and make being part of Travel Counsellors feel like being part of a family.

What stood out to you about Travel Counsellors?
For me, it’s the incredible TC community and the wealth of experience we can all draw upon. While we each run our own individual businesses, we’re also part of a global network spanning six countries. Our Global Head Office is the nerve centre of everything that happens across the business, ensuring that we have the very best tools and support at our fingertips.
Most importantly, what really stands out is the culture of care and putting the customer first – always. That’s something that makes Travel Counsellors so special.
How does Travel Counsellors support your business, your customers, and you personally?
The level of support at Travel Counsellors is second to none. For my business, I have access to technology that was built for the way I do
business, booking systems, and marketing tools that help me deliver exceptional service to my clients.
For my customers, the personal approach I take ensures they always feel valued and well looked after. Whether it’s a family holiday, a honeymoon, or a once-in-a-lifetime trip, they know they’re in safe hands.
