Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport is set to open its new expanded terminal later this month, following five years of construction work and more than $1bn in investment.
The Houston Airport System has confirmed the new Terminal D-West Pier will open on October 22.
The new terminal will feature gates D1-D6, designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft capable of flying farther without the need for refuelling, thereby enhancing Houston’s global connectivity.
The construction of Terminal D-West Pier is part of the $1.46bn IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program (ITRP), which aims to modernise and improve the airport’s international travel facilities.
The international terminal’s expansion will create over 250 jobs across 16 new dining and retail locations, including local restaurants such as The Annie Café and Bar.
Other major components of this investment programme include the refurbishment of the existing Terminal D, completed in 2023, and the construction of a new International Central Processor (ICP), set for completion over the next year. With the Houston Airport System already experiencing record travel volumes at both IAH and William P. Hobby Airport, this latest expansion is set to further enhance the city’s international connectivity and bolster its position as a world-class destination.
