Greenland Opens New International Airport, Enhancing Accessibility

Greenland has opened a new international airport, in its capital city of Nuuk, which will instantly enhance the country’s accessibility.

The new Nuuk International Airport will cater for larger aircraft with a new 7,217 foot runway. The new hub opened last week. Already, United Airlines has announced direct flights to Nuuk from Newark, New Jersey, staring in June of next year.

Greenland currently attracts its 130,000, or so, tourist visitors per year by cruise ships or flights to its smaller airports. The new Nuuk airport will act as Air Greenland’s chief hub, with the carrier operating its fleet of Airbus A330neo planes to Iceland and Denmark initially.

Internal transport within Greenland is also set to be transformed, with two domestic airports – in Qaqortoq in the south of the island and Ilulissat in the north – due to open during 2026.
