ITTN’S Sharon Jordan was a guest of the German National Tourist Office for its annual press event in the Blind Pig Speakeasy earlier this week.
This year was an extra special one, though, as the German people celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
Nicole Thorpe, German National Tourist Office and Catarina Erceg, Visit Berlin hosted a fantastic evening filled with German Hospitality at its finest; and a wonderfully emotional speech recounting their memory of when the wall came down had the group mesmerised and you could have heard a pin drop in the room.
For me, personally – as my brother-in-law comes from the old East Germany and has his own story of the day the news broke of the wall coming down – it was incredible to hear more stories of this historic day.
Guests were treated to German specialty foods such as the traditional Bratwurst, a delicious schnitzel and some spicy local meats. Couple this with the fact we were in one Dublin’s coolest speakeasy bars it would be remiss not to have some cocktails and the Germans didn’t disappoint – Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Breeze, Unity Old Fashioned and a Wallbanger Smash were some of the cocktails on offer. I’d love to say I tried them all, but alas old age and a work night restricted me to trying just the one – of course it had to be Checkpoint Charlie – and oh my was it a great choice.
In real Berlin style there was a buzzing atmosphere that was cool and sophisticated. And to add to the vibe in came a jazz band to entertain us all. The night ended on a high with a toast of ‘Berlinerluft’ a schnapps that’s unique to Berlin, and its fresh minty flavour was the perfect way to end the evening.
Things to note in Berlin during the 35 year unification celebrations –
1. Street Festivals: Various neighborhoods will host street fairs with food, music, and local crafts. Check out areas like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain for vibrant celebrations.
2. Concerts: Live music events featuring local bands and famous artists will take place in parks and public squares. Expect a mix of genres, including rock, pop, and electronic.
3. Guided Tours: Special walking tours focusing on the history of the Berlin Wall will be available, offering insights into its impact on the city and its residents.
4. Art Installations: Look out for temporary art installations and murals that commemorate the Wall’s history. Some will be interactive, allowing you to engage with the artwork.
5. Documentary Screenings: Various cinemas and cultural centers will screen documentaries and films about the Wall.
6. Light Projections: Iconic buildings and landmarks will feature light projections that tell the story of the Wall through visuals and music.
7. Public Discussions: Panels and discussions with historians, artists, and activists will take place, reflecting on the past and discussing the future of Berlin.
8. Memory Walks: Guided memory walks along the former Wall’s path, with stops at key historical sites, providing a poignant reminder of its impact.
9. Food & Drink Specials: Many local restaurants and bars will offer special menus or drinks inspired by the era surrounding the Wall’s fall.
10. Family Activities: Kid-friendly events, including workshops, storytelling sessions, and crafts, will make it a fun day for families.
Make sure to check local listings for specific dates and times, as well as any potential entry fees or reservations needed. I certainly wish I could experience my first trip to Berlin during this period in time. My only memory of the wall being watching it being destroyed on TV and Pink Floyd.
