France’s air accident investigation agency, the Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses, has concluded that the three pilots, including a senior training captain, of flight AF447, which crashed into the Atlantic in 2009, failed to comprehend that they had stalled the aircraft and that it was falling nearly straight down – and makes 10 new safety recommendations.
The flight recorders of Air France Rio – Paris flight AF447 were recently retrieved from the ocean. Three recommendations relate to operations training for manual airplane handling, two recommend that the regulatory authorities define additional criteria for access to the role of relief Captain in order to ensure better task-sharing in case of relief crews, one relates to airplane certification angle of attack measurement, four concern flight recorders’ images recorders, and there are two recommendations on recording additional parameters.
