A rise in international tourist numbers and an increase in staycations in the UK propelled LEGOLAND owner Merlin Entertainments back to profit last year.
Merlin also owns UK attractions like Chessington World of Adventures, Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and Peppa Pig Theme Park. It also owns SEA LIFE Bray, here in Ireland.
The group returned to pre-tax profit last year, showing a surplus of £136m, after suffering a £94m loss in 2021. It came on the back of 56 million people visiting its attractions worldwide.
Scott O’Neil, Merlin’s chief executive, was quoted by the Evening Standard as saying: “Although international tourism numbers are returning to pre-pandemic levels at different rates, domestic travellers seeking more connection and experiences with family and friends continue to enjoy the immersive and joyful escapism of our city attractions, resort theme parks, and Legolands through day visits, overnight, and short-break stays.
“Accommodation revenue was up approximately 55% in 2022, as guests chose to stay in our creative offerings, including treehouses, castles, and log cabins from California to London, and we are confident our themed accommodation will be popular at our flagship Legoland Resort being built in Shanghai.”
