The EU is, reportedly, looking to ban European airlines from charging passengers extra fees for carry-on luggage on flights.

According to The Times newspaper, new EU laws could allow for airline passengers to bring a small personal bag and a larger bag onboard, both for free.

The EU transport and tourism committee has voted in favour of banning extra onboard baggage charges and – according to the report – will now talk to member states before finalising any new policy.

The Times quoted a senior legal figure at lobby group European Consumer Organisation, as saying: “Consumers should be allowed to bring both a personal item and hand baggage on board without extra charges. This is a basic consumer expectation and it fully aligns with the Court of Justice’s ruling that reasonable-sized hand luggage cannot be subject to additional fees.”

However, airline industry group Airlines For Europe (A4E) has argued that air fares may rise as a result of such a plan becoming law.
