Egypt plans to double its annual tourist visitor numbers – to 30 million – within the next five years.
The historic northern African country hopes to be attracting 30 million visitors by 2028, as it continues to recover from the Covid crisis.
Egypt’s Tourism Minister Ahmed Issa told Associated Press that the country is popular with tourists again and that it should attract around 15 million people this year.
In the first 8 months of the year, Egypt attracted 10 million tourist visitors.
Mr Issa told Associated Press that 2023 should be a record year for Egyptian tourism.
“We’re seeing unparalleled demand, unprecedented demand for travel into Egypt,” he said.
Egypt’s tourism revenues jumped from $5bn to nearly $11bn last year. The country is planning to add around 25,000 hotel rooms to meet growing tourist demand.
“That will be the fastest growth in (hotel) rooms in Egypt over the past 20 years,” Mr Issa said.
