The International Civil Organisation (ICAO) has issued a bulletin to all airlines urging them to ban electronic cigarettes, a nicotine delivery device, from all checked-in luggage.
The ICAO bulletin outlines a number of recent incidents involving e-cigarettes overheating and, in some cases, causing fires. These could create a catastrophic situation if it were to malfunction in the cargo hold of a passenger aircraft.
In addition the US Federal Aviation Authority has endorsed this warning by issuing a safety alert to all operators last week. All airlines have been asked to inform all passengers about the dangers that e-cigarettes pose to the safety of all aircraft.
