The governments of Ireland and Brazil have formally begun talks concerning a direct commercial air route between Dublin and Brazil, Tourism Minister, Darragh O’Brien has revealed.

Minister O’Brien is currently on a trade mission to Brazil and announced he had met with Brazil’s Minister for Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, on the matter.

“[I am] pleased to announce the opening of negotiations on an Air Services Agreement between Ireland and Brazil. It will also provide onward connectivity to destinations throughout South America,” the Minister posted on X.

An Air Services Agreement will allow for full commercial direct air services between the two countries. A direct route has been mooted for some time, with South American carrier LATAM having previously been heavily linked as an operator.
