The demand for cruise holidays has risen, leading travel insurance provider Multitrip.com reports 174% increase in add-on cruise cover, in line with increased demand for cruise holidays.
Travel insurance provider Multirip.com has reported that the number of Irish policyholders adding cruise cover to their travel insurance policy in 2023 has more than doubled compared to 2019*.
The increase echoes figures released by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) in April of this year, which revealed that Irish and UK holidaymakers took around 1.7 million cruises in 2022, up from 479,000 in 2021 and nearing demand levels last seen in 2019; the UK and Ireland markets accounted for 29% of all European cruise passengers.
“There is undoubtedly pent-up demand for luxury and bucket-list holidays, including cruises,” according to Jason Whelan
“You will usually be offered default insurance by your cruise operator. However, it is important to check the fine print as quite often a policy holder will not be covered for eventualities such as onward travel expenses and accommodation should they miss a departure owing to a delayed or cancelled flight,” he added. “The benefits of including cruise cover as an add-on to your Multitrip.com insurance policy include compensation for a missed connecting flight, as well as cabin confinement due to sickness and even missing day trips due to bad weather.”
Annual Multitrip policies start from €19.95. Add-on cruise cover starts from €11.99 per person.
