Oliver Schmidt, Deustsche Bahn’s Director International Sales UK, Ireland and Northern Europe, was admirably restrained in his enthusiasm as Germany pounded Ireland to a 1 – 6 defeat at the Aviva Stadium on Friday, no doubt being sensitive to the feelings of the two Irish travel agents – Jim Tobin of FCm Travel and Gerry Bergin of Budget School & Group Tours – and four travel media who were his guests!
After pre-match drinks and tasty beef sandwiches at Ryan’s in Beggar’s Bush, we headed down to the magnificent Aviva Stadium, where the Germany team proceeded to give an equally magnificent demonstration of the art of possession football and being ready to take goal scoring opportunities whenever they arise.
Andy Keogh, who came on as substitute at the 69th minute, was first denied an on-target shot at goal and then, in extra time, headed in Ireland’s one conciliatory goal.
