Clayton and Maldron Hotels Owner Expands in Glasgow and Eyes Edinburgh

The owner of the Clayton and Maldron hotel chains – the Dalata Hotel Group – has officially opened its latest UK property, in Glasgow, and is on the look-out for potential sites in Edinburgh.

The new Clayton Hotel Glasgow City – which houses just over 300 bedrooms in the city’s former Custom House building on the banks of the River Clyde – is Dalata’s second hotel in Glasgow and will employ approximately 100 people.

The group opened the Maldron Hotel Glasgow City – which also comprises around 300 bedrooms – last year.

In an interview with Scottish newspaper The Herald, Dalata chief executive Dermot Crowley called Glasgow “an underestimated city” with “a very strong combination of corporate and leisure [business]”.

Mr Crowley said Dalata has been continuously looking to open in Edinburgh, also, but has found it difficult to find the right site.

“We have tried lots. We have the scars. There is never a time we are not working on something in Edinburgh. We will get in there eventually. It will be well worth waiting for the right opportunity,” Mr Crowley told The Herald

“We really like those two cities [Glasgow and Edinburgh]. Maybe it is the Irish thing – we love Scotland as a potential place to do business,” he said.
