Brandenburg’s 2013 Highlights

Travel media attended an exclusive lunch in London yesterday to discover more about Brandenburg, the area that is, literally, ‘all around Berlin’. Hosted by the tourism organisation for Brandenburg, the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg and the city of Potsdam, together with the German National Tourist Office, the event showcased the richness and sheer diversity of the Brandenburg region, including events and activities within the arts, outdoor living and some of the most significant points in European history.

Klaus Lohmann, Director of the GNTO UK and Ireland, who co-hosted the event, said: “Brandenburg combines green spaces, outdoor activities, world-class art and culture, together with a wide range of hotels and accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. In addition, Brandenburg is one of Germany’s foremost regions for barrier-free, accessible travel, demonstrating how Germany extends a warm welcome to all, whatever your interest!”

Highlights include how Potsdam’s UNESCO World Heritage status, together with its 17 palaces, creates the ideal background for spectacular events such as the Potsdamer Schlössernacht on 17th August or the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci taking place from 7th – 23rd June. This year also marks the 250th anniversary of The Most Beautiful Gallery, Potsdam Picture Gallery, Sanssouci Park, which has been re-curated as it would have been in its original 19th century glory.

Brandenburg is gardening country and, long after the Chelsea Flower Show has tidied away its last designer gardens and plant displays, the prestigious must-see Brandenburg State Horticultural Show (LAGA) takes place in Prenzlau from 13th April to 6th October.

Brandenburg is also a paradise for cycling enthusiasts, enabling visitors to discover superb cycling routes with historic palaces along the way. Pure, clear lakes along the way also invite visitors to take a refreshing dip during the summer months. Finally, just two hours south of Berlin lies a lakeside holiday-paradise, providing inspiration and facilities for yachting fans, swimmers, surfers and canoeists among others – the possibilities in Brandenburg are endless!
