As a union had predicted yesterday, the second strike in a matter of days at Lufthansa is causing disruption at Frankfurt Airport today, Tuesday 4th September. Nearly 200 flights have been cancelled at the busiest airport in Germany, as cabin crew represented by the UFO trade union walked out in a dispute over pay and conditions. This time staff are also on strike at Tegel Airport in Berlin and at Munich Airport.
Lufthansa cabin crew union UFO had threatened to stage a second strike on Tuesday 4th September and warned that it would be more damaging than last Friday’s walk-out.
Although not stating where and when industrial action would occur, the union said the strike would last for longer than the eight hours of industrial action at Frankfurt Airport on Friday and that it would hit more airports. UFO said it would give at least six hours notice of the strike.
The union is demanding a 5% pay rise and a guarantee that Lufthansa will not outsource jobs and use more casual staff. Lufthansa said it was not planning to improve its offer of a 3.5% rise in exchange for longer working hours.
