Air Canada Hosts Media Lunch for Canada Day

ITTN’s Sharon Jordan and Katie Doyle joined Blaithin O’Donnell, Sales Manager Ireland for Air Canada, at an inaugural press lunch in Dublin’s Westbury Hotel.

Blaithin guided the group through an overview of Air Canada’s operations in Ireland, highlighting in particular the unique features of its services and routes. She also shared essential information for travellers to Canada.

After the presentation, everyone read out fun facts about Canada that were placed around the table—these served as great ice breakers over lunch. We all know that Canadians are mad about ice hockey—but did you know basketball was invented there? And while we know about American Thanksgiving, Canada has one too—and it’s actually 40 years older than America’s! I do love fun facts.

Key Takeaways About Air Canada’s Operations in Ireland:

Air Canada has been expanding its presence in Ireland, with dedicated staff based in Dublin.

  • Three main Dublin routes:
    • Dublin–Toronto: Year-round, non-stop service.
    • Dublin–Montreal: Seasonal route, operating with increased frequency during summer (June–September). Operates 3 times weekly in May and October; 4 times weekly June–September.
    • Dublin–Vancouver: Also a seasonal route with increased summer frequency. Operates 3 times weekly in May and October, and 5 times weekly June–September inclusive.

All Dublin routes use the Dreamliner Boeing 787 aircraft for a consistent product and cabin experience.

Onboard Experience and Classes of Service:

  • Economy Class includes seat-back entertainment, complimentary meals/snacks, and free bar service.
  • Families with children aged 13 or under are automatically seated together at no extra cost.
  • Premium Economy offers larger seats, greater recline, enhanced meal service, priority boarding, and increased baggage allowance.
  • Signature Class (Business) features lie-flat seats, aisle access, upscale dining, lounge access, and luxury Acqua di Parma amenities.

Air Canada Lounges and Amenities:

  • Maple Leaf Lounges are available in Canada, the US, and London Heathrow for Business Class passengers and frequent flyers.
  • Signature Suites in Toronto and Vancouver offer exclusive amenities for international Business Class travellers.

Blaithin also chatted about visa requirements for Canada, joking that it costs just €1 a year for the privilege!

  • UK, Irish, and EU passport holders require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. The eTA costs 7 Canadian dollars and is valid for five years. Travellers should apply for the eTA before departure—approval is typically fast but shouldn’t be left to the last minute.

Blaithin concluded her polished presentation by noting that Air Canada has won multiple awards for its in-flight entertainment. She also highlighted that connecting flights and Winter Sun Destinations are a significant part of Air Canada’s business from Ireland.

Air Canada offers extensive connections from Ireland to the US, Caribbean, South America, and popular “winter sun” locations.

  • Notable winter destinations: Cancun, Montego Bay, Punta Cana, San José (Costa Rica), Nassau (Bahamas), Varadero (Cuba), São Paulo, Rio, Bogotá, Lima.
  • Canadian hubs (Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver) offer US pre-clearance, allowing passengers to arrive in the US as domestic travellers.
  • Through-checked baggage on connecting Air Canada flights within Canada eliminates the need for baggage re-check.

ITTN extends their thanks to Air Canada for the invitation to the inaugural press lunch dedicated to celebrating Canada Day.
