Ryanair Group CEO Michael O’Leary has called for EU sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and aviation net zero targets to be widened, saying that – due to the low levels of production, currently – there is “no prospect” of current environmental and emissions reduction targets being met by 2030.
“We’ve just barely got to 2% by 2026…No prospect of getting to 6% by 2030, and they’ll just move to the right. Not a chance—the supply simply won’t be there,” Mr O’Leary said.

Mr O’Leary was speaking at a press conference to announce Ryanair agreeing a multi-year/multi-billion dollar engine material services agreement with CFM (a joint venture between French firm Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aerospace), under which which CFM will support Ryanair’s engine maintenance programme, which is expected to include the opening of 2 engine MRO Shops, which Ryanair will open from 2029 to support its fleet of almost 2,000 B737 engines.

This multi-year agreement means that Ryanair has committed to purchase all its engine spare parts directly from CFM in a contract to support Ryanair’s fleet as it grows to 800 Boeing 737 family aircraft, and over 2,000 CFM engines.
