Laos Looking to Become Sustainable Tourism Leader in South-East Asia

Laos is looking to become a leader in sustainable tourism in south-east Asia, by introducing a number of new initiatives aimed at attracting an ever-more conscience-driven long-haul traveller.

The Asian country’s Government has begun researching sustainable tourism practices and business models for sustainable tourism development.

Part of the thinking is to boost visitor numbers to Laos’ capital Vientiane. In doing so, the Government will improve infrastructure – including water, clean energy and waste management systems – improve communication systems and make the city’s nightmarket safer and more appealing to pedestrians.

The initiative will focus on expanding existing attractions, researching sustainable tourism practices, and improving infrastructure, including water, clean energy, and waste management systems. It will also enhance communication technologies to improve city services and urban safety.

New attractions along the Mekong River and That Luang Lake are also planned, as are the introduction of electric tour buses to promote greener tourism.
