KLM has begun construction of its first gas-free hangar at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.
The new build will house aircraft maintenance for both KLM and sister airline Transavia.

Sylca Vellinga, KLM VP Real Estate & Facility Contracting, said: ““The start of the construction of the KLM E&M Tech Center and the Transavia Greenbase is an important milestone. This redevelopment symbolises our joint commitment to innovation and efficiency in the aviation industry. Today, we have literally and figuratively laid the new foundation for an energy-efficient hangar and a modern working environment for colleagues working on the maintenance of the new Airbus aircraft for KLM and Transavia.
“Fleet renewal does not stop with the purchase of new aircraft. It also requires the renewal of our hangars and retraining for the colleagues working here. We are working constructively with the construction consortium Visser Smit Bouw and Croon Wolters Dros and looking forward to good progress in delivering this hangar in the course of 2026.“

Hangar 10, built in the 1960s, is approximately 14,500m2 in size and no longer met current standards. The renovated hangar will have an open layout with plenty of daylight and will be used for the maintenance of Transavia aircraft and the Engineering & Maintenance Tech Center of KLM. In addition to the renovation of the hangar, two new office buildings for Transavia and KLM will also be constructed. This will bring the total floor area to approximately 27,000m2.
This will be KLM Group’s first gas-free hangar at Schiphol East. The upgrade of Hangar 10 is part of the High Impact Projects of KLM Real Estate & Facility Contracting. This redevelopment will receive a BREEAM certification, which is an international standard for classifying buildings based on sustainability and energy efficiency.
The hangar will provide space for both KLM and Transavia to perform aircraft maintenance. Never before have Transavia and KLM literally operated under one roof. Earlier this year, KLM began the construction of a new training center, The Link, which will house five flight simulators to be used by both companies to train pilots.
